How to Make a Space Feel Larger

We know that unless we’re renovating or opening up interior walls, we can’t change the square footage of a room. However, what we can do is implement certain tips to make a space feel larger, more open and comfortable. Today on the blog we discuss with you how you can do this in your home without any major or drastic changes made, while simultaneously achieving an elevated feel.

1. Use Reflective Surfaces

Mirrors are an optimal way of creating the illusion of more space. When placed strategically, mirrors reflect an abundance of light and the "mirroring" effect allows the space to appear larger by mimicking the area in front or behind it. A few places that mirrors work well in are narrow hallways that need more light, a full sized mirror in the bedroom or closet, your dining room, and over a fireplace.

Mirrors can also be used as decorative pieces, selecting ones with frames that have unique textures and designs are a great way to add extra personality to your space.

2. Use Lighter or More Neutral Tones

From flooring, to furniture, to wall color, selecting colors that are lighter and in a neutral color palette instantly brightens any room. Consider a neutral color palette of off-white, beige or light grey with darker or vibrant colors being in the accent pieces of the design so that necessary contrast is still implemented. Designing with light colors also creates an open, calming and sophisticated interior. A light color palette is easy to personalize and works well when combining with various textures, colors and patterns.

If your space already has darker flooring, cabinetry or counters, you can add bright accents to lighten the space, such as including a lighter rug or changing the backsplash in your kitchen.

3. Opt for Airy Furniture

We suggest furniture that has legs to keep your space feeling more open and not weighed down by heavy furniture. While we don’t suggest only incorporating furniture that has wooden legs, mixing furniture pieces will provide a balance in profiles and also bring variation in your space.

Depending on your design style, opting for airy furniture that uses light materials, like rattan or bamboo will assist in that light, open feel. As they’re already lighter in color, they will mesh nicely with your existing color palette and they also allow light to shine through them at times. Try incorporating these materials as; headboards, chairs, tables and credenza's.

4. Use Vertical Designs

Look up! Accentuating and utilizing vertical designs rather than horizontal designs will draw the eye upward, therefore making a room appear more spacious. Opting for chairs will taller backs, oversized vertical mirrors, bookshelves that are ceiling height and vertical shiplap can all make a space look larger. Designing with vertical elements can also be a fun component to incorporate into your lighting, for example; trying hanging a pendant light fixture or adding a tall floor vase in a corner of the room.

5. Go Bigger with Artwork and Accessories

Keeping a space minimal and less cluttered helps to maintain the integrity of your home’s true size. At MTI, we like to opt for bigger objects or pieces of art when designing a space rather than adding an abundance of smaller scaled art or decor accessories. This design strategy creates a focal point for your guests rather then many small décor items that can easily overwhelm the space. Going for larger, bold artwork makes the room feel more expansive and expensive.

Make the most out of small spaces in your home. With these tips, you can certainly create the visual illusion of a larger, brighter space! We hope we have inspired you create a space that you will love for a long time. At MTI, we believe in making design work for you, even when the space creates a small challenge.
