How to Choose the Right Rug for your Living Room

Today, we dive into choosing the right rug for your living room. There seems to be endless options out there, so let's narrow down the basics and help you find that perfect rug that will transform your space for the better!

Adding rugs in your living room helps ground your furniture and create zones in your home. Rugs are especially important in open concept living, which you can read more about here.

Let’s talk about sizing.

Make sure to have at least the front two legs of your furniture over the rug to ground the rug. We never have a rug floating underneath a coffee table without furniture over it. Typical sizes for living room rugs are 8×10, 9×12, and 10×14 feet.

Having an appropriate, larger sized rug will also make your space feel larger than it actually is. Below are some living room floor plan variations that show the amount of rug coverage that is suitable. As you can see the majority of the furniture is over the rug.

What kind of feel and style are you looking for?

Some rugs are much easier to maintain than others, and the material that you end up choosing will depend on how you would like to use the room and how much foot traffic the area gets. Easier to maintain materials include wool, polypropylene, natural fibers such as jute and sisal as well as cotton. These materials are best suited for higher traffic areas such as the dining area or living space. If you are looking for a more luxurious feel, lets say for your formal living room that doesn’t receive as much foot traffic, consider a silk or viscose material.

The style that you opt for all depends on your personal taste and what kind of vibe or energy you would like to emit in your living room. When it comes to style, there are patterned rugs such as vintage style, stripes, hexagon (anything that isn’t plain pretty much!), indoor/outdoor, natural fiber, hides, and so many more.

We’ve included an assortment of some of our favorites below that can hopefully spark some inspiration to where your style lies. Are you looking for a more casual, laid back feel in your living room? Consider a striped or neutral jute rug. Or perhaps you are looking to add a modern touch, then go for a pattern that is larger in scale.

Selecting the perfect rug to complete the space is one of our favorite parts of being an interior designer.
